TRANSFORMING FUTURE - STEVE TWIST’S NORTON SUPERBIKE

A bike that turns into a robot? Yes please! We didn’t think Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was as good as the first of its kind, but transforming robots are still definitely uber-cool. So it’s great to see Bournemouth University art student Steve Twist doing a down-home Olde Worlde Englande take on the concept. Steve’s video (top) stars that classic old British oil-dripper, the Norton Commando - the only thing missing is a half-timbered frame.

I owned a similar bike, the Norton Dominator, a while back, and had a slithery time avoiding the pools of oil it managed to leak every day. But here’s a thing - if my incontinent Dommie could speak, it would probably have sounded much like Steve’s Commando.

Transformers aside, conceptual future bikes have a splendid history, both in science fiction and in the real world. Among the best recentish concepts was the simply amazing 4-wheel Dodge Tomahawk (middle) of 2003, a massive device that - in theory - could max out at 680 km/h (420 mph)! Spokeless hub-drive bikes are almost certainly on their way, and an electric bike race has already been held on the Isle of Man. As for the cgi of the lady biker (bottom picture)... well, if that’s what’s we're going to see astride a future monowheel, bring ‘em on! The image was created by ‘Admin’ - nicely done sir, especially the neat heads-up display. Oh, and the hint of undies too...
